Paul Conway was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated from Valley Forge High School in 1999. Before dedicating two decades to the U.S. Navy, he honed his skills as an automotive technician, a foundation that would serve him well in his military career.
Enlisting in November 2000, Paul completed boot camp, Basic Engineering Common Core, and Damage Controlman A School at Great Lakes, Illinois. By April 2001, he reported to USS Austin (LPD-4) in Norfolk, Virginia, embarking on two deployments to the 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR) with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. His early service set the tone for a career marked by adaptability and commitment.
Paul’s journey continued with specialized training at the Navy’s Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Defense Technician School in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He then joined the first DDG hull swap, serving on USS Gonzalez (DDG-66) and later USS Stout (DDG-55). Across these destroyer tours, he completed three deployments—two to the 5th Fleet and one to the 4th Fleet, gaining expertise under pressure.
From 2007 to 2011, Paul returned to Cleveland as a Navy recruiter, connecting with his roots while guiding others toward service. His next assignment, aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), saw him train damage control response teams, ensuring readiness during two additional 5th Fleet deployments. When Enterprise was decommissioned, Paul joined PC Crew Hotel in Manama, Bahrain, serving on USS Chinook (PC-9). He later rotated to USS Zephyr (PC-8), supporting a homeport shift to Jacksonville, Florida. His final tour was as Damage Control Assistant and Top Snipe on USS Little Rock (LCS-9), completing a 4th Fleet deployment.
Retiring in 2020, Paul transitioned to BAE Systems Inc. as a Ship Superintendent in Jacksonville, overseeing maintenance, repairs, and upgrades for DDG-class ships’ shafting, underwater hull, and sonar systems. Now settled in Jacksonville Beach with his wife, Carmen, Paul cherishes life with his daughter, Emma, son, Murphy, and their two adopted pit bulls, Brutus and Meyer. In his free time, he enjoys boating, fishing, golfing, and family moments, carrying forward the discipline and camaraderie forged in the Navy.
